How $5 changed my life

There are moments in your life that take your breath away. Twenty years ago I was the mother of three young boys, not a hospice nurse. I woke one morning to a sense of great sadness- but not my own, it was of a friend. When I called her house her son answered and said she would call me back, she was not at home. She called later to tell me that a friend of hers had lost her son and she had been at the wake.  She went on to tell me that this woman had received a message from her son.  The grandfather of the boy always gave him a $5 bill when he saw him, it was their little joy. A few days after this boy died the grandfather went to the bank to cash a check and he received back a crumbled up $5 bill with a message on it amid the clean bills. My friend could not remember the message though. As I was listening to her story I felt this tremendous heat energy up and down my spine. I must know what the message was! I asked my friend for the bereaved mother’s phone number and promptly called her.  I was COMPELLED to do this. When I explained who I was, that we had a mutual friend and that I needed to know the message, the mother told me, “Read the Book. We don’t Die” was written on the $5 bill in blue and green magic marker.

I was stunned. I had that very same book. Well of course I did! This is how Spirit works, but I didn’t know it then. It was a book written by George Anderson, a medium in Long Island. I had just finished reading two of his books that past month and it changed my views on the afterlife in a profound way. I was going to donate the books to the library that very same week, but that little voice in my head had told me to hold on to them.

So I told her, “I have that book!”

And she replied, “Yes, I know, it’s the bible…”

I then explained to her about this medium and I felt that somehow her son wanted to contact her thru him. Okay- now these words just flew from my mouth and the very next thing I said and did even stunned me. I asked her where she lived; I packed up my three boys and drove to her house, to bring her the books. I left the boys in the car and they were unusually quiet….Angels abound I am quite certain.

I walked into this woman’s grief and held her, consoled her, listened to her tears and pain, pain I could never truly understand having not experienced what she had. I sat with my hands folded, I was not myself. I was a vehicle for someone, something greater than myself, and so I just allowed the words to flow.

She read the books and then called to find out George Anderson was having an open meeting in three weeks time. She went and she was called on stage in the midst of three hundred other grieving people, she was called! Her son spoke through this man, giving personal details that no one could have known. This was a gift of Spirit for a grieving mother. Her son continued to make connections for her and bring her tangible signs of his unending love, the bonds of love are never broken. I watched in amazement, it was a lesson for me as well. This changed my life. And I was also blessed with a new sister, a soul sister in this life. We are friends to this day.

I pray daily to be an instrument of God’s love. I remain open to spirit. I am ever grateful for God’s love however it manifests.
