The world of dreams can lend magic to our waking world. Some time ago I had a dream of sitting at my baby grand piano in my living room with John Lennon. We were sitting side by side on the piano bench our hands were covered with pizza. I must admit I was a bit worried that the keys would get dirty….
But let me just say that I have a love for pizza, I believe it is indeed the ambrosia of the Gods, well at least here in New Jersey it can be. It is right up there with my love of chocolate, now if someone just managed to develop a chocolate pizza….
But I digress, back to the John Lennon at my piano. So we are discussing his music, which of course influenced my life from an early age. My first guitar lesson at the tender age of 8 my teacher played “8 days a week” and I remember hearing “I want to hold your hand” as a young child and asking my Mom to do the honors.
He asked me, “What was your favorite song of mine?” Now I am pretty certain he thought I was going to say “Imagine” because it is one I play at the piano by ear, but I stopped and thought and said instead, “Jealous Guy”. It is a soulful apologetic love song, very beautiful. It is certainly not as popular as “Imagine”. He smiled at me…and the dream faded.
I remembered the dream the next morning and thought it was fantastic; Pizza and Rock and Roll, two things that fill my life with joy. I went about my day. I found myself in a store distracted by my needs but I stopped and cocked my head as the opening chords wrapped themselves around my ears:
“I was dreaming of the past/ and my heart was beating fast…” John was singing “Jealous Guy” over the din of my day…wow, wow, wow.
